Yutaka Okano

NEC

NEC's Environmental Senior Manager, Yutaka Okano has had an impressive career in environmental sustainability for large corporations, spanning two decades. He is successful in achieving compliance with air, waste and chemical regulations as well as setting long-term strategies in energy, water, and biodiversity. Before joining NEC he spent fourteen years at Toyota, developing long-term environmental strategies and conducting environmental impact assessments. At NEC his work has included developing supply chain CO2 measurement tools, leading the company's TNFD nature-related disclosure initiatives, and promoting regional collaboration on sustainability across ASEAN markets. Yutaka argues that environmental value has to be built into business operations rather than reported alongside them, and that digital technology is the key to making all technology sustainable. He is also an advocate for connecting environmental goals to their wider social context, designing solutions that address decarbonisation alongside issues such as ageing populations and local transport, and for incorporating the cost of ecosystems into economic calculations.
